Kuldiga is a city in Latvia located in its western part in historical region of Kurzeme. It is a small quiet town with population of just under 13,000 people (2017). Kuldiga – practically the same age as Riga. The first written mention of the city date back to the first half of the 13th century. Interesting that historical the center was practically not damaged during the world wars. Here preserved old wooden buildings of 17-18 centuries. Geography and climate
Kuldiga is located 155 km west of the capital of Latvia – Riga, in a place where a small river Alekshupite flows into the Venta River. City often called “Latvian Venice”, since in the historical center many houses are located near the water. Kuldiga is in the valley, which is characterized by picturesque nature. Story
The first written mention of Kuldiga dates back to 1242. It was then that the Teutonic Goldingen castle was laid here. WITH over time, a settlement arose around the castle, which at the end 14 century received city rights and even joined the Hanseatic League. The new city quickly gained a leading position in the region and before the first half of the 17th century remained the capital of the historical region Courland.
In 1615, severe flooding and subsequent fire destroyed the old wooden buildings. Kuldiga was rebuilt again. In the middle of the 18th century, an old Teutonic castle was dismantled. Stones were put on the construction of urban houses. At the end of the 19th century It opens numerous productions that turn city in a major industrial center of the region.
