Karlštejn – one of the most important castles of the Czech Republic, located near Prague. This most famous royal fortress stands on a powerful rock surrounded by coniferous forests. The castle of Karlštejn was founded in 1348 by Charles IV as its main residence and storage facilities for royal and imperial regalia. Construction was completed in 1365, when the chapel of the Holy Cross was consecrated in the Great Tower. This the chapel became the place of storage of the royal regalia that were here until 1619, leaving it only during the Hussite wars Interestingly, Karlštejn acted as royal residence only for Charles and his son Wenceslas until 1419.
