Gnomes – is one of the main urban legends of Wroclaw. Their figures and drawings can be found everywhere: on the walls of houses, on old streets and squares, in souvenir shops.
There are several stories where the dwarves came from and how they became part of urban folklore.
The first story.
It is believed that the first gnomes appeared precisely in Wroclaw. No one does not know exactly when and how the dwarfs arrived in the capital Lower Silesia and why they decided to settle here. Elder Dwarfs Name Papa-Gnome (there is an interesting analogy with the Smurfs here. It is not clear, or the legend was imposed on famous characters cartoons, or served as an idea to create them). They settled on the banks of the Odra long before the formation of the city. Later came the people who made contact with the dwarves. Hard working gnomes put their hands to the construction of the Old City, and grateful the inhabitants perpetuated their names in the names of streets and districts.
Second story
The inhabitants of Wroclaw themselves turned to the dwarves who lived in Sovykh mountains in order to rein in the harmful brownie. Generous gnomes caught wrecking and sharpened him in their caves. And residents of the city invited them for permanent residence.
Third story
This legend is the most prosaic. Gnomes appeared in Wroclaw in 80s of the 20th century as characters of the anti-communist movement the poles. They were used in drawings and propaganda of activists. AND, Apparently, the residents liked it so much that they firmly rooted in the urban culture.
Which legend to believe is up to you 
My advice to you is that while walking around the Old Town, be more attentive and you You will certainly be able to see the figures of the dwarves or drawings, as well as take a picture of the most interesting ones.
