Edirne is a city in the far north-west of Turkey. Located in Eastern Thrace on the Evros River near the border with Greece. Geography and climate

Edirne is located in the European part of Turkey on the hilly the plains of Eastern Thrace on the border with Greece and 20 km from the border with Bulgaria at equal distance from the Aegean, Black and Marmara seas. The climate is humid subtropical with hot summers and cool, wet winters.

Story

Edirne was founded by the Roman emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. on the site of an older Thracian settlement. The city was named Adrianople. In 378, a battle took place here between the Romans and the Goths, during which the Roman Emperor Valens was killed, and Roman legions were defeated. After the collapse of the Roman Empire Adrianople was part of Byzantium.
