City Bardejov (Slovakia)
Bardejov is a small resort town in the north-east of Slovakia. Known for a completely untouched historical core, which was Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Geography and climate
Bardejov is located in the north-east of Slovakia, not far from border with Poland. The city is located 40 km from Presov and 445 km from Bratislava. Bardejov is located in a picturesque area near southeastern foot of low mountains and is known for its mineral sources, thanks to which the status of a spa resort. City has a temperate climate with warm summers and cool winters.

Story
Bardejov was first mentioned in 1241 as a market settlement. The arrival of German immigrants after the Tatar-Mongol invasion gave a significant impetus to its development. In 1376 Bardejov received the status of a free royal city. From now until 16th century Bardejov flourished through trade and crafts, being one of the most important cities of hungarian kingdom

Bardejov – historical Center
Bardejov is considered the most “gothic city of Slovakia” and has unique (preserved) medieval core, which includes Many historic buildings, ancient sites and fragments of the old city walls. The heart of the city is the town hall square, bordered by rows of old burgher houses. Small Bardejov accommodates over 100 historical and cultural monuments, which create an amazing atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
Town hall
In the center of the square is located the Town Hall, built in the first half of the 16th century. This building is a unique example. medieval architecture. Town Hall Hall is decorated with 118 stone sculptures. The interior has kept precious coffered ceilings and inlaid doors. Also inside is a statue of Roland – symbol of urban rights.
Medieval fortifications
The uniqueness of Bardeyov is still in the fact that there are preserved significant sections of city fortifications with towers and bastions. Construction of brick walls, placed probably on site of old wooden fortifications, started in 1352 and completed already in 1376. In the first half of the 15th century, four were built. towers. In the 16th century, the city’s defense system was adapted to modern requirements of artillery. Recent work related to expansion of urban fortifications, dated to the 17th century. Powder tower
Bardeyov’s defense system consisted of stone walls forming a shape similar to an oval with a lengthening on the northeast to the side. Church of sv. John the baptist
Church of sv. John the Baptist – the second most important religious construction in Bardejov. The church was built in the middle of the 15th century.
