Итака – один из самых знаменитых островов Ионического моря,the birthplace of the legendary Odyssey. Attracted by a rich centuries-old history, thousands of tourists from around the world visit the island annually. The capital of Ithaki is Wati. The population is 5,000 people.
On the island you will not find anything grand or unusual. Ithaca is suitable for pacified and measured rest. But, despite its “calm” character, Ithaca has to offer numerous restaurants and taverns, where you will be served the best dishes Greek and European cuisine.
Weather on Ithaca
As on the island of Zakynthos, on Ithaca pronounced Mediterranean climate, which is characterized by a long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Tourist season on Ithaca opens in May and ends in mid-September, although quite often comfortable conditions for rest continue up to the end of October.
July and August are the hottest months on Ithaca. Thermometer bar in these months can reach 35-40C. Therefore recommended time for holidays on Ithaca – May and September, when the average temperature air is around 25s.
Sights Ithaca
Resting on Ithaca, you can make a cultural program:
- visit the National (National) Maritime Museum with an exposition of vintage photos, musical instruments and clothes sailors;
- take a tour to two archaeological museums in which collected exhibits Mycenaean period;
- explore the ancient Acropolis located on Mount Aetos;
- make a pilgrimage to the monasteries of Kafaron and Taxiarchis, built in the XVII century.
- go down to the Nymph Cave, where, according to legend, Odysseus hid treasures of Feakov.
Ithaca beaches
Clean, calm, small, but with rather cool water (typical of all the islands of the Ionian Sea) Ithaca beaches meet the highest requirements of quality rest.
Surrounded by lush greenery, a white pebble beach is located at 3 km from the city of Vati in the bay Filiatro. If you prefer gritty shore, then you can easily walk to Dex beach, which located very close to the bay.
The beautiful beach of Agios Ioannis, which is 9 kilometers from Wati, will delight you with golden sand and clear water of emerald color.
But the best beach in Ithaki is Polis Beach, which is located in the north in the vicinity of Stavros, the second largest Ithaca city.
Resting on Ithaca, you will not have problems finding the right one. Beach: in almost every corner of the island you can find a place which you will like.
