Archeologists knew almost nothing about the ancient theater – they didn’t mentioned in ancient sources. Researchers were oriented only on the data of the beginning of the XX century. At the time, their German colleagues spent a little work, on the basis of which they found out: the theater there really is.
Excavations were carried out in 13 places, and they all confirmed the hypothesis. Partially managed to detect a stepped elevation (several rows of seats), part of the orchestra (paved with stones for performances), retaining walls and rooms in which they changed clothes actors
The Ministry of Culture announced the continuation of the excavations in order to full identification and preservation of a valuable monument. Now this one of the priorities of the municipality of Lefkada, which is closely collaborates with other islands of the Ionian archipelago. After all some scientists believe that in the era of theater construction on the island was ruled by the colonialists from Corfu. And others are completely sure: the great Homer in his legendary Odyssey called Ithaca it is Lefkada.
