5 Greek geoparks entered the new program UNESCO

Новая программа ЮНЕСКО “Глобальные геопарки” была утверждена вParis on November 17th. It will be an expression of gratitude to countries who are making efforts to preserve unique landscapes planets in their original form. Five geoparks of Greece entered the program. In total, 120 geoparks of 33 will take part in it. countries.

Greece turned out to be one of the richest countries in this respect. AT the number of selected geoparks were:

  • Island Lesbos. Covered with vegetation he considered one of the greenest islands of Greece. Also on its territory is the famous Petrified Forest – a unique a cluster of trees, as if mothballed volcanic activity. By the way, this natural park is included in A global network of geoparks since 2004.
  • Psiloritis (Crete) – mountain range, which covers the prefectures of Rethymnon and Heraklion. Mountain themselves the slopes and the areas around them are known for many endemics.
  • Vikos-Aoos National Park (Epirus), famous rich fauna (25 species of animals and 130 species of birds) and flora (1800 plant species).
  • Vuraikos National Park in the North Peloponnese, in which there are picturesque gorges.
  • Sitia is one of the greenest and the fertile regions of Crete.

The new UNESCO program recognizes these regions as places with special geological heritage and international significance.
