Loy Kratong and Yipeng Festival – colorful extravaganza of light and sound

Once upon a time, we first visited the Loy Krathnog holiday and Yipeng Festival, which take place on the same date. We already wrote about this article and repeat about what these events are, I now I will not. Two years later, I again got to Chiang Mai on these holidays and was in the thick of things, so I really I want to share fresh photos from there. Although already passed about 3 months from that moment (my hands did not reach put it on the blog), this whole extravaganza of light and sound is still in I live in memory, as if it were yesterday. Though I am not a fan to be in a crowd, but for a while, sometimes you want to plunge into it unbridled fun, considering that everyone behaves kindly and there are almost no drunk people.

In 2012, the Chiang Mai event took place on November 27-29, although in total, the people ran cratones into the water (small rafts with candle) and khom loi in the sky (sky lanterns) all week. BUT The main parade and the maximum number of lanterns were November 28th. Every year the date changes because it is tied to the moon calendar, or more precisely to the full moon of the 12th month. It seems to be always happens in November. If you search for a date, first of all worth seeing on official sites or specifically on Chiang Mai here is this link. As I understand it, everything will happen on November 16-18 2013

By the way, I remind you that the photos on the blog are in new articles wide. 1200 pixels, and by clicking on the photo you can look at them all screen in large size, flipping from one to another.

Photos will not go in chronological order, but mixed up The fact is, I was in two parades (27 and 28 numbers), and although they may have quite different meanings for the locals, for they are very similar to foreigners, so there is no point in distinguishing them. Well, and the launch of craton and sky lanterns is an interesting sight in any day.

Experiments with long exposure and zoom

Photographs do not convey extravaganza of sound, but I can tell you what was very noisy, especially near the river, where basically all were people. The noise was not from the people themselves, but from fireworks and firecrackers, smoke sometimes my eyes hurt. The only thing that bothered when any Thai or Farang put a big cracker pouring liquid fire right in the center of the crowd, and just manage to escape from the sparks. Remember on bridge did this all the time while I launch craton photographed. So the radius of the sparks coincided with the width bridge, so you had to press straight into the fence, but this is not rescued.

And I still wonder why their fires do not happens—

Separate launch of flashlights

Surely everyone has seen on the Internet photos of sky lanterns from Thailand, when they are in the sky just darkness. Turns to to Loy Kratong and Yipeng festivals, these photos have only indirect relationship. The fact is that such a launch is done on separate territory outside the city and it is not spontaneous, as in Chiang Mai, well planned. Moreover, there are two such launches, the first – training and free for local, second for foreign tourists and for money ($ 80-3000). Not weak, huh? Online http://www.yeepenglanna.net/ everything is told about this organized event.

My friends and I went for a free launch, but because of traffic jams, huge crowd, and the fact that we were from the site across the river (and bridges away), did not have time to get to the epicenter by the very beginning, and so I missed all the fun and could not to photograph. It’s a shame, of course, but with my eyes I saw everything from afar. Indeed, a terrific mass launch, but $ 3000 definitely not worth it. Therefore, if you go, go much in advance and free run for local.

That’s because of this river and the bridge, which was a huge line, I didn’t get to the other side

P.S. Anyone who has not seen this holiday once, very much I recommend to visit. Only book hotels in advance, preferably for a few months, but it may not be available rooms. And for In order to navigate a bit, I recommend our review. Guesthouses in the historic center of the city.

P.S.S In the top of the best places, it is the northern cities, such as Chiang Mai and Sukhothai, not southern. I have nothing to compare with, but judging by the stories in Chiang Mai are much bigger.
