What I photograph in travel and how

Having received another letter asking what kind of photographic equipment I am I use, I decided to write a small post on this topic in order not to repeat more. I am not a professional photographer and do not pretend on him. The experience of communicating with the camera while counted in several for years. I did not go to various courses (although the desire to periodically appears), I did not read clever books, so all that is written here, view teapot, keep in mind :)

The list of my equipment at the moment

I decided to update and rewrite the post a little about my photographic equipment, as its composition has changed quite a lot. Was almost complete upgrade is done and now I hope few years nothing more is needed.

Progress does not stand still and I switched to mirrorless a couple more years ago. At first it was a Sony a6000 camera (crop 1.5) with one Sony’s only 18-105 f4 lens. This kit is more compact and less weight than my previous Canon 7D + Canon kit 24-105 times in 2. Probably, when you do not earn directly in photographs (weddings, photo shoots, etc.), then after some time you want compactness, and so as not to have to carry with you every time the whole photo backpack. Read my post What camera choose a novice photographer.

After 2 years of using Sony’s mirrorless and it already seemed I’m too big with a lens 18-105: you can’t put it in your pocket, but in urban backpack, it also takes place decently. However a couple of years later I changed the Sony a6000 to the Sony a6500, the lens stayed the same. This is a new model, but in the same line, where they made touchscreen and added stabilizer built into the carcass.

I also bought a Canon G7x mark 2. Initially I took it for video selfie (tried to shoot video), but also in terms of travel blogging she showed herself well. Built stub, touchscreen, pretty convenient focal (24-105) for a non-interchangeable lens, and very compact! I traveled with her for 2 months in Thailand and she was every minute with me, lay in my pocket. Honestly, not sure now I’ll often take Sony with me. Of course, Sonya takes a lot better focus faster in the dark and iso working up to 3200 compared to 800 at Kenon, but our compactness is everything.

Also, recently I started taking photos on the phone. Tell me someone is at the beginning of blogging, I would not believe it. But Modern smartphones (I have a Galaxy S7) are doing quite good. photos under good shooting conditions, especially if it isn’t artistic photography, and documenting some point, an inscription, a shop, a menu in a cafe, etc., that is what is often needed travel info bloggers.

My technique a few years ago

Once, quite a long time ago, I shot on a regular soap box just for family archive, so to speak. The first few articles on this blog just with photos from this soapbox. But time passed, Inquiries have grown in relation to the photo, and travel has become more frequent. Therefore, I bought a Canon 500d DSLR. It so happened that entered It is in the ranks of the Kenonovods. After a year and a half, it became clear the camera I want better. I began to miss the normal autofocus, large ISO, more convenient management. Therefore acquired Canon 7d and a pair of lenses. Well, and then mirrorless cameras went.

Separately, I want to write about the wide-angle lens Tokina. I when I first hooked it up, I just marveled at how much can get into the frame. There was a feeling that the blinders were removed from me, and finally see the world. Yes, it is not always applicable, but in some the case is even very. And even now I have no breadth for Sony, I periodically trying to buy it, it was too much for me to like this one type of lenses.

Principles of shooting on a journey and in general

I have my own principles regarding taking photographs. I wrote about them in detail in a post – How to take pictures while traveling – ready-made scheme and typical errors.

  • I rented in moderation. If conditions do not allow, in my opinion, often do not even try. But if you really like the view, I can half an hour to stand there and make quietly 50 photos with different settings and angles. Here you just need to understand when and why you will shoot. One thing is for pleasure (for example, a starry sky), another business for a blog when it is very important to make information snapshots.
  • Often I take several pictures with different settings to look at the camera screen for the best results. If anything, then here I have a post about the basic settings of a digital camera
  • At night I try to use a tripod (for example, mini), or just do not take off. Because a blurred photo, on which is not clear, I still will not place.
  • I try not to take pictures “I stand like a column monument, “I do not like. But I do selfie, in order to then add to the post and show that it was real i was there.
  • I also lay the time for photography on trips, so friends not always happy when I take a camera – they have a lot of me to wait. Ideally, it is better to do 2 trips: one – to see eyes, the second – to take pictures.

Photo processing

All photos are taken in Raw format and imported into Adobe Lightroom, driving off when importing through a filter (preset), which I I made for myself. Then manually, correcting some of the photos color balance, brightness, etc., I frame, and sometimes I add a preset Matts Deep Blue Sky. True, I have already called this preset differently and its parameters are adjusted. For the blog export photos in size 2048px in width, and impose a watermark there same in Lightroom. My hosting is 50 gigs, so the volume uploaded photos can not save.

Especially for using Lightroom almost did not read. I just tried it at random, and only when it’s not at all clear in Internet. Therefore, so far some of the tools I have in it I know, but I do not use them. I rarely use Adobe Photoshop, just for some deep processing. I have a very detailed post about photo processing – How to process photos in Lightroom.

Photo storage

Previously deleted a lot of photos, probably 50%, but since then a lot of time has passed. He began to make less shots, more often to shoot something what I need. Therefore, sometimes I do not delete anything at all. Of course everyone smeared and with unsuccessful angles go to the basket.

All photos are stored on an external hard disk of 4 TB in size. I keep in those formats in which I shot – from a SLR in RAW, with soapbox / phone in jpeg. Video sources are not always stored, but Finished videos are in AVI or MP4 format. In addition to the main base I make 2 backups, one for the second external hard drive, the second for cloud dropbox. Wrote more about everything in the post. How to store Photo .
