There is a locality in modern Turkey, the historical name which – Cappadocia (Cappadocia), which is translated into Russian means “Land of beautiful horses.”

The uniqueness of this land lies in its landscape, mainly of volcanic origin and also in the presence of underground cities and cave monasteries that carry us to the times early Christians.

According to one of the historical versions, in this territory, about 3 a million years ago there was a volcanic eruption, which lava covered the whole surrounding area. In turn, the elements of nature – the wind and the rain contributed to the transformation of the landscape, making it unique in its kind. Therefore, only here you can see creations created by nature itself – stone pillars, on top which – basalts and andesites, and below – tuffs.

Throughout its history, the boundaries of the locality are not times subject to change, but today, under the boundaries its territory is understood by the region in the center of the peninsula of Asia Minor, not landlocked. This is a flat plateau, at the height of one kilometers above sea level without any vegetation and a minimum number of rivers, surrounded on all sides by mountains – Erciyes and Hasan.

Cappadocia, historically located at the crossroads of several important migration flows, was a “tidbit” for the section. If you try to briefly describe these periods of invasive wars and different boards, it will look something like this: At first, the land belonged to the Hittites (from the 18th to the 6th century BC), and later Medes (from the 6th to the 4th century BC). Then the Persians conquer it.

In 350 BC. er the kingdom itself is created Cappadocia, which in 333 BC. er conquers Alexander Macedonian. In 17 AD already she becomes a Roman province where it lasted until 1071, until the territory departed the Seljuks as a ransom for the Byzantine emperor – Roman IV Diogenes.

The 15th year of the 16th century was marked by joining the Ottoman Empire, and 1923 – the entry into the Turkish Republic.

Underground cities of Cappadocia

Among all known from antiquity, the cities of Cappadocia, leading the role belongs to Goreme (Goreme), the former from 6 to 9 centuries one of the largest Christian centers in whose territory there were about 400 churches. Now it is a national park – Turkey Museum under the open sky.
